Tips for taking pictures at the scene of a car accident

There are numerous tips to follow after a car crash. The Morning Call recently listed some beneficial steps to take after such a traumatic event, such as staying calm, getting to a safe location and calling the police. Another step to always remember is to take photos of the scene.

Photographs are highly advantageous when you begin to work with your insurance adjuster and attorney after the motor vehicle accident. At the end of the day, remember that it is always better to have too many photos than too few.

Get all the details

Most people know to take pictures of both vehicles as well as any injuries anyone sustained. However, you also want to make sure you take pictures of the inside of your car as well because damage could have occurred there. It is also a good idea to get a wide-angle shot if possible to capture the full scene. Other good things to take pictures of include the following:

  • The weather
  • Damaged road signs
  • Any skid marks
  • Glass on the road

Time stamp the photos

Most smartphones should have the capability of providing a time stamp. Getting the time and date on the photos will help with your case later. It helps prove definitively when the accident occurred and combined with an official police and medical report, helps provide the clearest picture possible of the incident.

Look for other cameras in the area

You may not be able to get absolutely every detail before the police arrive, so it is a good idea to look out for any other cameras that may be in the area. If your collision occurred by a store, then you should contact the store owner. The employer may feel reluctant to become involved, but you can speak with your attorney later to acquire any more evidence. A video camera can help provide a clearer picture as to how the collision transpired.
