Avoid these 4 mistakes after an auto accident

Most people end up in a car accident at one point or another. So, it is important to know what you need to do right after the crash occurs. Many drivers lose out on money that should be theirs because they forgot to do something or did the wrong thing.

Here are several actions you never want to do after a collision.

1. Not taking pictures

Luckily, virtually everyone these days has a smartphone that can take pictures. Before you go to the doctor, you should take a few pictures of both vehicles as well as a couple photos of the surrounding area. This serves as essential evidence and can help expedite your insurance claim.

2. Failing to call the police

Many drivers will not call the police because they do not believe the extent of the damage warrants it. However, you want to play it safe rather than end up sorry. Even if you think you share some of the blame, a police report could reveal that you are not liable at all. A police report is a crucial piece of evidence that can work to your advantage.

3. Sharing too much on social media

Until you have received your insurance payout, you should not say anything about the accident on social media. Posting the wrong thing on Facebook or Twitter could cause you to lose a lot of money. The other side can use posts and pictures from social media to claim you did not suffer too serious of injuries.

4. Taking the first settlement offer

To get the case over with, the other driver's insurance company may offer you a settlement right off the bat. This amount is typically less than what you reasonably get by going to court. Always have your attorney look over any settlement offer to see if you should take it or fight for more.
