Avoiding motor vehicle accidents in inclement winter weather

So far, this has been a strange winter in terms of the weather. Storms, freezing temperatures and lots of snowfall have affected many states in America.

Pennsylvania is no stranger to inclement winter weather, and most residents know how to handle themselves when driving in winter storms. However, it is never a bad idea to refresh your memory about driving safely and preventing or avoiding motor vehicle accidents.

Be sure to clear away any snow or ice that has accumulated on your car. This ensures that you can see out of all car windows. It also prevents snow from blowing off your car and creating a crash hazard for you and other drivers.

Drive slowly in snowy or icy conditions. This gives you time to spot hazardous road conditions as well as other motorists who are driving recklessly.

Focus on one task at a time when driving in bad winter weather. For example, if you know you are going to make a turn, slow down ahead of time to avoid braking and turning at the same time.

Always engage in defensive driving, which means remaining alert to the traffic patterns around you. Remaining alert and watchful enables you to see and avoid situations that may result in a motor vehicle accident.

Even though you may practice safe winter driving, it does not mean those in your vicinity will follow your good example. Motor vehicle accidents caused by reckless and negligent winter driving can lead to injury and missed work. It is important to remember that there are many legal remedies available for those who have suffered injuries in a preventable car crash.
